There are other places also for you to discover!!
Apano Meria
Apano Meria spreads in the mountainous landscape, where peace and tranquility embrace the scattered rural houses with the intoxicating aromas of fennel, thyme and wild olive. The view is magnificent, the images as if taken from other times and the few taverns that appear here and there invite visitors to travel through the local flavors in the everyday life of another era. The settlements of Mytakas, Papouri, Rihopo, Plati Vouni, Hartiana and San Michalis seem to have been forgotten in time, while the beaches of Apano Meria, such as Varvarousa, Aetos, Marmari and Gria Spilia will surely enchant every visitor.
Apollo Theater
The historic Apollo Theater is one of the most important sights of Syros, as it is an emblem of the cultural heritage of Ermoupolis. It was created in 1864 by the Italian architect Pietro Sambo who inspired its design by 4 impressive Italian models including the Milan staircase and has since adorned the heart of the capital Hermoupolis. The curtain of the Apollo Theater opened with an Italian troupe that, among other performances, staged the famous Italian opera Traviata.
Its architectural grandeur, however, failed to prevent the great disasters it suffered over the years. The Apollo Theater was forced to close and go through a long period of renovations and interventions with state funding, EOT and the artistic supervision of Dimitris Fortsas and architect Petros Pikionis until 2000. Today the theater hosts various artistic and cultural events such as the Aegean Festival, famous theatrical works and performances of world renown.
Galissas beach
Galissas beach is one of the largest and most popular beaches of Syros. This is a fully organized beach that offers all kinds of amenities. Visitors can swim in the crystal clear waters, relax on the golden sand, enjoy unique flavors in the taverns of the settlement of the same name and ascend to the chapel of Agia Pako from where the view is magnificent. The beach is easily accessible either by bus or by private boat.
Ano Syros
Ano Syros was founded in 1200 by the Venetians and continued to be inhabited throughout its history, maintaining its universal identity and medieval character. The countless steps, which pass through the white houses and the arches at the edge of the hill, lead to the top of the settlement, where the Catholic Diocese of San George is located.
The city was created gradually, amphitheatrically on the rocks like a natural fortress for the inhabitants, while the outer walls of the houses were a natural fortress protecting the locals from raids. The narrow cobbled streets allowed the inhabitants to hide from the various attacks of the pirates, while the wooden doors in the places Portara, Epano and Kato Terma, Skalakia and SaBastias completely sealed any entrance to the city.
Homeland of the philosopher Ferekidis, Ano Syros was and remains a city with a special physiognomy and special character, a city that through its monuments and historic buildings invites visitors to take a look back in time through the Historical Archive of the city, Exhibition of Traditional Professions and other points of interest, such as the bust of the Syrian National Martyr Don Ioannis Daleziou and the source of Agios Athanasios. A city with a universal identity that unfolds through the Jesuit and Capuchin monasteries, the church of Panagia tou Karmilos and other catholic temples.
Church of Agios Nikolaos
The church of Agios Nikolaos is a three-aisled majestic church near Miaouli Square that began to be built in 1848, based on the plans of G. Metaxas and the consent of King Otto and was completed in 1870. Agios Nikolaos, patron saint of Ermoupolis stands out materials and the impressive architecture of its construction, the icon of St. Nicholas that was silver-plated in Moscow, the marble despotic throne, the pulpit and the marble iconostasis painted by George Vitalis.
It is a two-storey monumental temple with marble bell towers, an imposing marble staircase and marble propylaea, Ionic style columns, archaic motifs, arches, relief decorations, gray-blue slabs that make sure to visit a unique temple. The icons of the church were painted by some of the best hagiographers of the time, while many Greeks abroad and shipowners contributed to the construction of the church.
